What a Pittsburgh AI Consultant Actually Does (and What to Ask Before You Hire One)

Most people searching for a Pittsburgh AI consultant don't know exactly what they're buying. Here's what the engagement actually looks like, what it doesn't include, and the three questions worth asking before you commit.

What a Pittsburgh AI Consultant Actually Does (and What to Ask Before You Hire One)

The term "AI consultant" covers a wide range right now. It includes software vendors who call themselves consultants, workshop presenters who sell seats, and offshore development shops that will build you something you can't maintain. If you're a small business owner or a realtor in the Pittsburgh area trying to figure out whether to hire one, the category itself doesn't tell you much.

So here's a direct answer to the question: what does a Pittsburgh AI consultant actually do, and what should you ask before you hire one.

What the Engagement Actually Looks Like

A real advisory engagement starts with a conversation about your business, not a demo of a product. The first session is diagnostic. Where is your time going? What decisions are slow? What work is repetitive enough that a system could handle it? The output of that conversation is a clear picture of where AI can create a measurable return in your specific operation — not a generic list of tools.

From there, the work is design and implementation. That means building the prompts, configuring the tools, connecting the workflows, and making sure the system runs without you having to manage it daily. It also means showing you how to use it — not in a training session format, but sitting across the table from you while you drive the clicks.

The engagement ends when you have something working. Not a roadmap. Not a recommendation deck. A system you can run this week.

What It Doesn't Include

An AI consultant is not a software developer, a marketing agency, or a CRM implementation partner. I don't build custom software, run your paid ads, manage your social media, or set up your accounting system. There are good people in Pittsburgh who do all of those things, and I'll tell you who to call when the need is concrete.

The distinction matters because a lot of what gets sold as "AI consulting" is actually software implementation — someone building a custom tool for your business that you'll depend on them to maintain. That's a different relationship with a different cost structure. What I do is configure existing tools — tools you can access directly, tools that don't require a vendor relationship to keep running.

Three Questions Worth Asking Before You Hire

  • What will I be able to do differently at the end of this engagement? A good answer is specific: "You'll have a prompt workflow that drafts your listing descriptions in 10 minutes instead of 45." A vague answer — "you'll be better positioned for AI adoption" — is a sign the engagement doesn't have a clear deliverable.
  • Will I own the system, or will I need you to maintain it? If the answer involves ongoing retainer fees to keep the system running, you're buying a dependency, not a solution. The systems I build run on tools you control — ChatGPT, Claude, Zapier, Google Workspace. You can modify them, hand them to a team member, or walk away from them without losing access.
  • Have you worked with businesses like mine in Pittsburgh specifically? National AI consultants know the tools. They don't know that a South Hills realtor's client base looks different from a Northern Virginia agent's, or that a Canonsburg contractor's scheduling problem has a different shape than a Phoenix contractor's. Local context matters when you're designing a system for a specific business in a specific market.

If you're a realtor doing 10M–75M in annual volume, or a small business owner running a 1–10 person operation in the Greater Pittsburgh area, those questions have direct answers when you're talking to Dugan AI. The engagement is in-person, the deliverable is a working system, and the standard is whether you got time back or found a path to revenue — not whether you feel better about AI in the abstract.
